Inside the Experience: An Intern’s Perspective on Growth and Learning

Joining Hayson Knell as a planning intern has been a transformative experience. I was excited to be part of a nationally operating firm where I could contribute to meaningful work and grow both professionally and personally, and that’s exactly what I’ve found.

Throughout my internship, I’ve worked on a diverse range of planning projects across different regions of New Zealand. From assisting with resource consent applications to participating in site visits, research, and project coordination, each task has helped me build practical skills and deepen my understanding of the planning profession.

One of the most rewarding aspects of this journey has been the confidence I’ve gained. With the support of the team at Hayson Knell, I’ve come to see that I’m capable of much more than I initially believed. Being trusted with real responsibilities and encouraged to take initiative has helped me grow into a more assertive and capable contributor.

What makes Hayson Knell truly stand out is the safe and supportive environment they create for all. I’ve felt empowered to explore areas I’m genuinely interested in and take ownership of my learning. That kind of space has made all the difference, not just in building skills, but in discovering the kind of professional I want to be.

This internship has confirmed that planning is the career I want to pursue. I feel incredibly fortunate to have been supported into this role from the beginning, and I’m proud to be part of a team that’s making a real impact across the country.

Looking back, I’m grateful not just for the experience, but for the belief Hayson Knell placed in me, it’s helped me believe in myself too.
